serving others.. what does that really mean?.. how do you actually serve some one else?.. do you open the door for them when they have their hands full?.. do you smile at a stranger passing you by?.. do you volunteer make dinner when everyone else seems too tired?.. do you sit and listen to a friend vent about their frustrating day?..

when we serve others we serve God.. some times i serve others but for selfish reasons or some times i serve with a negative attitude.. that is definitely not the way i would ever serve God.. so then, why would i serve my fellow brother and sister that way?.. whether they are a family member, close friend, or stranger, what keeps us from serving others with ultimate care, love, and selflessness?.. it can be pride, only wanting to look out for ourselves, or the simple fact that some times we are just too exhausted to serve..

life is so hectic and busy.. we end up doing 4 things at once, not really even focusing fully on the task at hand.. but we think we need to multi-task in order to just get through our day.. and then we need time for ourselves and to do fun things.. some times there just enough minutes in the day to serve..

i don't know.. i don't think that's good enough.. i think we need to readjust our society and rearrange some priorities.. i think that work and school and life needs to be surrounded around serving others.. when we put service and love at the center of our life, then everything else will just fall into place around it.. but we all know things are not that simple.. i struggle with serving others all the time.. i make the excuse that i am busy with school and then i work and i also help out with my family, and then i need to spend time with friends, and i can't forget about time for myself, and the list goes on and on..

maybe its not so much that we need to carve time out of our day to "serve", but just live our life in service.. mother teresa once wrote about how people do not pray anymore and they use the excuse that they are too busy.. but mt, in all her wisdom, reminds us that we do not necessarily need to take time out to pray, but live our life as prayer.. "prayer does not demand that we interrupt our work, but that we continue working as if it were a prayer"..
i think there are plenty of opportunities around us to serve.. we just need to be open and recognize how we can live a life of service and love.. the little things can be done with such love and grace that can make people feel like the king of the world.. it is in showing this love, God's love, that we serve others.. we can't forget to take care of one another.. we are all in this together and we all belong to each other through God.. i know i can easily forget to think of others and act towards people with love and service, but this is an important thing to help shape our life.. without it, we are lonely people who have forgotten we are all one body..
